Analysis of quantum decay law: is quantum tunneling really exponential?

نویسندگان

چکیده

The exponential decay law is well established since its first derivation in 1928; however, it not exact but only an approximate description. In recent years some experimental and theoretical indications for non-exponential have been documented. First we solve analytically the time-dependent Schrödinger equation one dimension a potential consisting of infinite wall plus rectangular barrier with finite width also cut harmonic oscillator by considering as sequence square potentials. Then using staggered Leap-Frog method, potential. both methods, time dependence survival probability particle parameter \( \lambda \) are analyzed. results exhibit behavior at short intermediate times.

Is Radioactive Decay Really Exponential?

Radioactive decay of an unstable isotope is widely believed to be exponential. This view is supported by experiments on rapidly decaying isotopes but is more difficult to verify for slowly decaying isotopes. The decay of 14C can be calibrated over a period of 12,550 years by comparing radiocarbon dates with dates obtained from dendrochronology. It is well known that this approach shows that rad...

Exponential Decay in Quantum Mechanics

First of all: disregard all of so called “preliminary physical expectations”, because all these expectations are just a pseudonym for prejudices elaborated by the older generation. These words belong to Dirac, not to me. The right way of creating new physics is different: one should begin with a beautiful mathematical idea. But it should be really beautiful! No special relations to physics is c...

Exponential Decay of Quantum Wave Functions

I’ve no doubt that for ODEs, the questions and techniques for exponential decay of solutions go back a long way, maybe even to the nineteenth century. For one body systems with decaying potential, I think they are at least in Titchmarsh’s book. For ODEs with explicit polynomially growing potentials there are precise asymptotics going back to the at least the middle of the twentieth century. My ...

QUANTUM TUNNELING IN MEDIUMS WITH LINEAR AND NONLINEAR DISSIPATION

We have applied the method of integration of the Heisenberg equation of motion proposed by Bender and Dunne, and M. Kamella and M. Razavy to the potential V(q) = v q - µ q with linear and nonlinear dissipation. We concentrate our calculations on the evolution of basis set of Weyl Ordered Operators and calculate the mean position , velocity , the commutation relation [q, p], and the energ...

Exponential Decay and Ionization Thresholds in Non-Relativistic Quantum Electrodynamics

Spatial localization of the electrons of an atom or molecule is studied in models of nonrelativistic matter coupled to quantized radiation. We give two definitions of the ionization threshold. One in terms of spectral data of cluster Hamiltonians, and one in terms of minimal energies of non-localized states. We show that these two definitions agree, and that the electrons described by a state w...
